Tazkiya –A Continuous Process

Aisha, the wife of the Prophet of Islam, says of him: “On every occasion, the Prophet of Islam remembered God.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 373). This tradition shows the prophetic way of purification, that is to say that the Prophet purified himself on all occasions. This shows that tazkiya is not the name of any short training course, but is rather a continuous process. When a believer discovers the truth, due to the awakening of his conscience, every event or experience in his life becomes a point of reference for his purification. This enables him to receive spiritual nourishment on a daily basis. In this way, this process of tazkiya continues till his last breath. Just as physical energy is generated by constant nourishment, so also is tazkiya achieved by constant effort. There is the general impression, however, that a brief training course is all that it takes to attain a state of tazkiya. That is, it is just like receiving religious education in a seminary within the limited frame of a short-term prescribed course of study. But the truth is that this is an underestimation of tazkiya.

Tazkiya, a cumulative process, and not the result of any fixed practice, requires an awakened mind. It is attained through an unflagging intellectual process and not by engaging in any temporary course of study.

This remembrance of God is what is most desired of a human being. Therefore, the Quran adjures us to remember God very frequently (33:41).

What is meant by remembrance of God? It does not mean any numerical or statistical exercise but rather it is one’s mental condition. According to a tradition, Ayesha, the Prophet’s wife, said: “The Prophet Muhammad used to remember God on every occasion.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 373) One can understand the meaning of remembrance of God from this tradition.

Abundantly remembering God means that whatever a person sees or whatever he experiences, he should make it a point of reference for the remembrance of God.

…God, the Lord of the worlds, He will naturally come to your mind as the Owner and Lord of the universe; One whose blessings are so many that they cannot be counted. Contemplation or deep thinking is automatically involved in remembering.

A tradition has been mentioned in different books of Hadith. Ayesha said: “The Prophet Muhammad used to remember God on every occasion.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 373) According to this tradition, frequent remembrance of God means that every experience and observation should create God-oriented thinking to the point where the whole world of nature will become a reminder of God for a person. Remembrance is not just the repetition of some words. The natural way of remembrance is the awakening of man’s mind to such an extent that throughout the different circumstances of his life, he begins to experience God in everything. Everything becomes a means of reminding him of God.

Remembrance and Prayer

As has been recorded in different books of Hadith Ayesha said: “The Prophet Muhammad used to remember God on every occasion.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 373)

This tradition does not relate to worship. Certain people describe it in the sense of the repetition of such words as Bismillah, Alhamdulillah, Inshallah, Mashallah, et alia. But this interpretation does not describe the real meaning of…

…اللَّہَ ذِکْرًا کَثِیرًا (33:41)۔ یعنی اے ایمان والو، اللہ کو بہت زیادہ یاد کرو۔ اللہ کے ذکر کثیرکا مطلب یہ نہیں ہے کہ زبان سے بار بار اللہ اللہ دہراؤ، یا بار بار زبان سے اس طرح کے الفاظ بولو کہ الحمد للہ، سبحان اللہ، ماشاءاللہ، وغیرہ۔

اللہ کے ذکر کثیر کا مطلب مخصوص الفاظ کی تکرار نہیں ہے۔ بلکہ اس کا مطلب معنوی اعتبار سے اللہ بار بار عارفانہ رسپانس (realized response) دینا ہے۔ یہ معرفت کا ایک کلمہ ہے، نہ کہ حروف تہجی کے کچھ کلمات کی لفظی تکرار۔ ایک حدیث سے اس مفہوم کی تائید ہوتی ہے۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی اہلیہ ، عائشہ آپ کے بارے میں فرماتی ہیں:کَانَ النَّبِیُّ صَلَّى اللہُ عَلَیْہِ وَسَلَّمَ یَذْکُرُ اللہَ عَلَى کُلِّ أَحْیَانِہِ(صحیح مسلم، حدیث نمبر 373)۔یعنی نبی صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہر وقت اللہ کو یاد کرتے تھے۔اس کا مطلب یہ ہے کہ ہر موقع (occasion) پر آپ کو اللہ کی یاد آئے۔ ہر تجربہ آپ کے لیے ایک پوائنٹ آف ریفرینس بن جائے، جس کو لے کر آپ اللہ کو بار بار یاد کرتے رہیں۔ ذکر اللہ کی معرفت کی بنیاد پر زبان سے جاری ہونے والا ایک کلمہ ہے، وہ الفاظ کی تکرارنہیں ۔

مثلاً آپ رات کو بستر پر گئے، اور آپ کو نیند آگئی ۔ اس وقت آپ کو یہ یاد آیا کہ اللہ نے نیند کی صورت میں کیسی عجیب نعمت عطا کی ہے کہ دن بھر کی تکان کے بعد انسان سوجاتا ہے، اور پھر وہ صبح کو تازہ دم ہوکر اٹھتا ہے۔ اسی طرح رات کے وقت آپ…

ذکرکیا ہے

پیغمبر اسلام صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کےمعمول کے بارے میں حضرت عائشہ کی ایک روایت ان الفاظ میں آئی ہے: کان النبی صلى اللہ علیہ وسلم یذْکُر اللہ على کل أحیانہ (صحیح البخاری، حدیث نمبر 305، صحیح مسلم، حدیث نمبر 373) یہ روایت اہل ایمان کے بارے میں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی ایک سنت کو بتاتی ہے۔ اہل ایمان کو ذہنی اعتبار سے ایک بیدار ذہن (awakened mind)بننا چاہئے۔ ان کی ربانی سوچ کواتنی زیادہ ارتقا یافتہ ہونی چاہئے کہ ان کی زندگی کا ہر واقعہ یا ہر تجربہ ان کے لئے ذکر اور دعا کا پوائنٹ آف ریفرنس بن جائے۔

اس روایت کا مطلب یہ نہیں ہے کہ آدمی دعا اور ذکر کے کچھ کلمات رٹ لے، اور ہر موقع پر ان کو زبان سے دہراتا رہے۔ یہ سنت رسول نہیں ہے۔ سنت رسول کے مطابق ذکر اور دعاایک تکراری عمل نہیں ہے، بلکہ وہ ایک تخلیقی (creative) عمل ہے۔
